Powdertech Wood Finish powder coating for aluminium façade and louvres replaces wooden panelling

Powdertech Wood Finish powder coating on aluminium replaces wooden panelling

Overview

Montgomery House is a residential property in the Westminster district of London. From June 2021 until September 2022 a full refurbishment of the building was undertaken, including the replacement of old timber battens and panels on the exterior tower and balcony elevations of the building.

The Project

The design intention was to maintain the appearance of the wooden cladding on the original building whilst meeting the requirement to meet the relevant reaction to fire rating, A2, S1-d0. This project was undertaken in the shadow of the Grenfell Tower Disaster. Powdertech Wood Finish meets all the necessary tests to be awarded this rating. Aluminium façade folded to 30mm x 30mm castellation, and flat aluminium panelling were fabricated by Accord Engineering. The metal pre-treatment and powder coating application process was rigorously trialled to ensure that all requirements for protection and safety were met before the project started.

The use of aluminium in combination with PWF is not new, in fact it has been applied to architectural projects for over 20-years and has also been applied to similar projects to replace wood. See ‘Wood finish solar shading Neasden, North London’  where dangerously deteriorating wintergarden screens were replaced with PWF finished louvres.

The client chose the shade ‘Charred Walnut’ and Powdertech coated 1500m2 of aluminium façade, inset balcony panels, spandrel panels and miscellaneous screening. The images demonstrate the flexibility and adaptability of PWF to achieve an attractive, long-lasting finish. Using aluminium brings the obvious benefits of strength combined with a light weight. The screens will not warp and need only minimal maintenance.
