A coating for Leicester City Bee Bus Stops

Powdertech Corby powder coated the delightful ‘Bee Bus Stops’, installed throughout the city of Leicester. The finish is a bespoke polyester powder coating Bristol Blue/Black.

The Project

As part of a project to replace and revamp its bus shelters, Leicester City Council went one step further and decided to install Living Roof and solar-powered shelters. These are the first for any UK city, their objective being to respond to the climate emergency by reducing the ‘Urban Heat Island Effect’,

Designed by Clear Channel, and made by CMF, the Living Roofs, affectionally nicknamed ‘Bee Bus Stops’, are planted with a mix of wildflowers and Sedum plants. A host of environmental positives are claimed for the shelters including attracting pollinating insects, absorbing rainwater falling on the roof, capturing particulates from the air, and helping to make the city a greener and happier place.

The metal bus shelters supporting the roof-top gardens needed a high-performance coating that will withstand the water and flora run off without deterioration or discoloration. Pre-treatment is the most important stage in powder coating. The longevity and performance of the coating relies directly upon the integrity of the metal preparation. Powdertech operates an immersion system for chrome-free metal pre-treatment processes for aluminium and galvanized steel.

All of our top coat finishes are formulated to architectural standards and have excellent durability.

A bespoke colour was created to the requirements of Leicester City Council – a blue/black matt finish. This is part of our Inspirations Collection.
